Most students and families spend their final weeks before a flight looking for one simple thing: not another full explanation of visa and residence-permit law, but a direct answer to one question — "what needs to be in my bag today?" This is that list.

Why this is different from the visa and residence-permit guides

The student visa guide and the residence permit guide each walk through a legal process from start to finish. This post has a narrower job: what actually has to be in your carry-on, what needs to be confirmed and ready before you board, and what can wait until after you land. Three short lists, built around one specific day — not another explainer of the same processes.

Pack these in your carry-on, not your checked bag

• Your passport, with at least 60 days of validity beyond your authorized stay — the threshold Turkey's Ministry of Foreign Affairs states.
• Your original diploma or latest school certificate and transcripts, plus the certified translation if you already have it by this stage; if you don't, that's fine too — the next section explains why.
• A printed copy of your university acceptance letter. It is the basis of your visa and residence permit, and it shouldn't be somewhere you can't reach it, like a checked bag.
• A few passport photos, for university and residence-permit paperwork you'll need in your first days.
• If you've already applied for health insurance (GSS) before flying, bring the enrollment receipt or proof of application — but if you haven't yet, the rule below means you still have time.

Confirm and prepare these before you fly

• Passport validity. For the 90-day visa-exempt entry, Turkey's Ministry of Foreign Affairs requires at least 60 days of validity beyond your authorized stay; you'll want considerably more for the residence-permit stage, since your permit can't outlast your passport either. Renew now if yours is close to expiring.
• Diploma equivalency (denklik). If this isn't finished yet, you don't need to push back your flight. An initial file review generally only needs a document scan, and denklik is usually requested around final registration — as explained in our guide to legalizing your documents.
• Health insurance (GSS). You don't need this arranged before you fly. If you enroll in the General Health Insurance scheme within three months of registering at your university, you won't need private insurance at all.

Handled after you land, inside Turkey

• Filing your student residence permit (ikamet) application, online at e-ikamet.goc.gov.tr, before your 90-day visa exemption runs out.
• Paying the residence-permit card fee — students are exempt from the duty and pay only the card fee, 964 TL in 2026.
• In-person registration at the university, where the printed acceptance letter and original academic documents you packed in your carry-on are exactly what you'll be asked for.
