Where you'd actually study: the nine partner universities

North Cyprus — officially the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), recognized as a state only by Turkey — has built an outsized higher-education sector for its size, taught largely in English and filled with international students. Nine of HOMA STUDY's 53 partner universities are there:

Tuition in euros — and how it compares with the mainland

TRNC universities quote tuition in euros, and on our partner list those euro figures sit consistently below mainland equivalents for the high-cost clinical programs. Current examples (HOMA STUDY partner price list, reviewed July 2026):

Two notes so these numbers stay honest. These are the standing partner rates already applied in our published price list — institutional discounts under our agreements, not per-student negotiations, and they can change between intakes (every figure on the pricing page carries its verification date). And a lower price is not automatically the better choice: program language, clinical training sites, and the recognition question below all belong in the same decision.

Recognition, precisely — because the wording matters

This is the section to read slowly. Three separate layers exist, and they are not interchangeable:

1. YÖDAK — the TRNC's own accreditation council. Every university operating in North Cyprus must be accredited and supervised by YÖDAK (Higher Education Planning, Evaluation, Accreditation and Coordination Council), established in 1993 (yodak.gov.ct.tr, accessed 30 Jul 2026). YÖDAK is listed as an affiliate of ENQA, the European association of quality-assurance agencies — affiliate, not full member, and we'd rather you hear that distinction from us than discover it later.

2. YÖK — Turkey's recognition, university by university. Turkey's Council of Higher Education recognizes TRNC universities individually; recognized institutions appear in Turkey's central placement guides, and their graduates deal with Turkish authorities accordingly. On the YÖK-recognition list published by the TRNC Consulate-General in Istanbul (drawn from the 2019 ÖSYM guide, accessed 30 Jul 2026), seven of our nine partners appear: Near East, Cyprus International, Girne American, University of Kyrenia, Final International, European University of Lefke, and Cyprus Health and Social Sciences. Cyprus Aydın and Bahçeşehir Cyprus post-date that published edition, so for them — as for any university you're serious about — we check the current YÖK status of the specific university and program during consultation rather than assuming it.

3. Iran's ministries — the layer Iranian students most often skip. Iran's Ministry of Science (MSRT) and Ministry of Health keep their own lists of foreign universities they evaluate for degree equivalence, those lists change periodically, and some TRNC universities have appeared on them while others have not. If you may one day need your degree evaluated in Iran — government employment, licensing, further study — check the current ministry list for your level and field before committing, and raise it in your consultation, because it can change which university we recommend for you.

Getting there from Iran

There are no direct international flights to North Cyprus from anywhere except Turkey — Ercan Airport's scheduled traffic connects through Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir and Antalya (Ercan Airport official site, accessed 30 Jul 2026). For Iranian students the routing is straightforward:

1. Tehran to Turkey. Iranian passport holders currently enter Turkey visa-free for stays of up to 90 days in any 180 — check the current rules before booking, as policies can change.
2. Turkey to Ercan. A connecting flight of roughly an hour and a half from Istanbul (shorter from the south coast) on carriers such as Turkish Airlines, AJet and Pegasus.
3. Entry and the student permit. TRNC entry is passport-based, and the official tourism guidance notes that entry stamps are not placed in passports. After arrival, your university's international office guides you through the student residence-permit steps — standard onboarding at all nine partners, and we brief you on the paperwork before you fly.

Budget for the transit itself: door to door, Tehran to Girne or Lefkoşa is a full travel day, and you'll repeat it each time you go home. It's a real cost of island study — more on trade-offs below.

What life costs day to day

A useful quirk: tuition is set in euros, but the everyday currency of North Cyprus is the Turkish lira — groceries, transport and utilities behave much like mainland Turkey, which keeps daily spending moderate (see our cost-of-living guide for the mainland baselines). Student-housing listings reviewed in July 2026 commonly quote around €150–€250 a month for a dormitory room or a room in a shared flat in Girne and Lefkoşa, with university dorm packages usually priced per semester; treat that as a working range rather than a quote, since it varies by university and town. What you won't face is Istanbul's rent curve: central-Istanbul apartment prices, the item that most inflates mainland budgets, simply have no equivalent in towns this size.

Student life on the island

The honest picture: campus-centered and coastal. Girne is a harbour town backed by mountains, Lefkoşa is a small capital, and social life gathers around university facilities, beaches, and a cafe scene priced for students. The international share of the student body is high, English goes far both on campus and off, and the towns are compact enough that commutes are minutes, not hours. Students consistently describe the island as calm and safe-feeling; it's a place where the university is the center of gravity, not one attraction among thousands.

The honest trade-offs

We place many students in North Cyprus, and we still make sure every one of them hears this list first:

• Transit. Every trip home routes through Turkey; add hours and a connection cost each way.
• Scale. These are small towns. If you want metro lines, mega-events and metropolitan anonymity, you want mainland Turkey, not the island.
• Work market. Part-time and post-graduation job options on the island are limited compared with Istanbul or Ankara; treat North Cyprus as a study base, not a career market.
