Hasan Kalyoncu University is a private university in Gaziantep, in southern Turkey. Unlike most of the universities in our directory, it is not in Istanbul — and that is one of the two facts that decide whether it suits you.

The other is the shape of its catalogue. 49 programs are offered across four levels — associate, bachelor's, master's and doctoral — and eleven of those 49 are engineering. If engineering is your target and your budget is finite, this university offers a combination that is hard to find: eleven engineering specialisations in a catalogue whose tuition ceiling is $6,500 a year. In Istanbul, reaching that many engineering options usually means going above that ceiling.

The counterweight, stated plainly: Gaziantep is a smaller student city than Istanbul, with a thinner Iranian student network. If part of your motivation for studying in Turkey is being in Istanbul, this is not your university. If your deciding metric is what you get per dollar of tuition, it deserves a serious look.

Bachelor's admission is assessed on your high-school record; Iran's national entrance exam plays no part. The 10 English-taught programs require an English certificate or a pass in the university's own exam. The 39 Turkish-taught programs normally mean a Turkish preparatory year, which belongs in your calendar and your budget from the start.

For master's and doctoral study, the previous degree and its transcripts are the basis of assessment, and some fields also ask for a statement of purpose and references.
