Istanbul Gedik University is a foundation university established in 2010 by the Gedik Education Foundation, which industrialist Halil Kaya Gedik, one of the first internationally trained welding engineers in Turkey, had set up in 1994. Its main campus is in Yakacık in the Kartal district on the Asian side of Istanbul. The university runs six faculties covering Engineering, Fine Arts and Architecture, Economics, Administrative and Social Sciences, Law, Health Sciences and Sport Sciences, alongside a vocational school and an institute of graduate studies. Its engineering identity draws on the Gedik group background in welding and casting, with dedicated welding and mechatronics laboratories and close links to the group companies. Teaching is mostly in Turkish, and several engineering and business programs are offered in English.

Location
Istanbul is Turkey's largest city, a layered metropolis spread across two continents, and for many students the ferry crossing between Europe and Asia is part of the daily commute. It holds the country's largest concentration of universities, so student life turns up everywhere, from library cafes to cheap lunch spots in almost every district. Public transit is extensive — metro, tram, Marmaray rail under the Bosphorus, and city ferries all work with a single Istanbulkart — though rush-hour traffic tests everyone's patience. It is also Turkey's most expensive city, with rent taking the biggest share of a student budget, which is why shared flats and dormitories are common. Winters are mild and rainy, summers warm and humid.
