Bursa spreads out at the foot of Uludağ, the mountain that gives the city its skiing weekends and snowy winter backdrop, and it wears its history lightly as the first Ottoman capital. It is one of Turkey's largest cities, yet student life clusters around its universities, so it feels more settled than crowded, and locals are used to newcomers. A light-rail metro, city buses, and a cable car up the mountain handle most journeys, with Istanbul close enough for a day trip by ferry or intercity bus. Living costs run well below Istanbul's. The climate is mild and green — the city is nicknamed Green Bursa for its parks and plane trees — with cool, rainy winters and warm summers.
